Home is a choice
Four months ago, my girlfriend and I had an idea. We would go on a road trip and drive across county and back. It would take us a month. We left December 15th, 2016. Today is April 8th, 2017 and we are exactly 2,095 miles away from are apartment in Philadelphia.
This is where we live.
But this is our home.
Read time (3:00) We have yet to return to where we live but we have found a home where we are.
Anyone can do what we are doing. For real. We don’t make a ton of money, we did not have a large savings, no sponsors, I’ve been out of work for a month, our car’s engine needed new head gaskets, our tenant is 18 days late paying rent, and here we are. Still going, still moving on to the next adventure. But how?
How do we continue to do anything? We decide to.
Really, that is it. It’s not easy but no matter where we are in life or what we think will happen we will be faced the momentary reality of our situations. In that moment, we will make decisions. Decisions to continue on or to change paths. To chase the dream or be moved another direction.
How do we know where we are going?
We don’t, and when will we ever? A decision is a choice, and choices are our ability to make things happen. Outcomes are the results of choices that we try to project based on our past experiences from similar choices. Sometimes, they go our way, sometimes better, sometimes- we have to make a new choice. But making them is what’s important.
Have confidence in your ability to make it happen. Give your choice a chance.
For us, the decision was to climb mountains in Death Valley, explore the red walls of Zion, stare into the filled openness of the Grand Canyon, sleep cold nights on pink sand dunes in a tent, drive through small towns, submit to rest under the stars and to wake with the heat of a sunrise.
There is no correct choice. We found home to be exactly where we are, where we will be, and doing what we enjoy. This choice gives us the opportunity to learn new passions, meet people, explore, and give back. That’s how we turned this one month road trip into half a year. We decided that’s what we wanted to do, and did it.
Obstacles arise in life. We can be in a car traveling the United States, or our living rooms hanging with our dogs preparing for the next day. Taking a moment to step back to remember there is always an opportunity to decide what it is we want. It’s not about what’s right or wrong. It’s deciding.
You can live someplace and it’s still not your home.
Home is not just where we live, home is a choice, a decision to live how we want to live. A home is freedom to choose, to be the kings and queens of our kingdoms, or slaves to what we think we should do versus what we know is calling us.
Take a moment, consider where you live and what’s calling you home.
